KUANTAN, March 18 – Pahang booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Malaysia FA Cup on Saturday after claiming a hard-fought 1-0 win over Kedah at the Darulmakmur Stadium.
In a fiercely-contested clash between two of Malaysian football’s biggest sides, it was Tok Gajah who emerged triumphant courtesy of Mohamadou Sumareh’s winner in the first minute of first-half injury-time.
In an attempt to clear a dangerous freekick floated into the box, Kedah centre-back Alvaro Silva could only nod the ball back off his own bar and Sumareh reacted quickest to send a diving header into goal to win it for Pahang.
Over at the UiTM Stadium, Safawi Rasid notched the first hat-trick of his professional career to inspire Johor Darul Ta’zim to a 3-2 win over UiTM FC.
Safawi netted in the 11th and 40th minute to put Harimau Selatan firmly in control of proceedings, before Lucas Pugh pulled one back for the hosts on the stroke of halftime.
But JDT’s up-and-coming forward then scored his third of the evening in the 71st minute to restore their two-goal cushion, which proved crucial as Faiz Bandong reduced the deficit with a minute remaining to set up a grandstand finish.
Meanwhile, Kelantan’s miserable start to 2018 continued as they were thrashed 4-1 by PKNS FC at the Shah Alam Stadium.
First-half strikes by Romel Morales (16’) and Mahali Jasuli (43’) gave PKNS a stranglehold on the contest, before Safee Sali and Rafael Ramazotti got in on the act in the 61st and 67th minute respectively.
Mohammed Ghaddar pulled one back from the penalty spot for Kelantan, but it was little more than a mere consolation for the Red Warriors.
Perak TBG are also through to the last eight as a brace by Wander Luiz sandwiched a Gilmar strike to hand them a 3-1 win over Penang, who grabbed a late goal when centre-back Ugo Ukah popped up at the other end to net in the 89th minute
Finally, the final third round tie of the night went the distance as Kuala Lumpur beat Melaka United 3-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes.
