BUENOS AIRES, Oct 13 – Shuttler Goh Jin Wei has become the first ever Malaysian gold medallist at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) when she clinch the girls’ singles title in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The 18-year-old prevailed 16-21, 21-13, 21-19 against China’s Wang Ziyi in a pulsating girls’ singles final on Friday.
With the win, the Malaysian contingent have achieved its one gold target.
By accomplishing the feat, Jin Wei has also become the first ever shuttler to win both the World Junior Championships and YOG titles.
South America has proven to be Jin Wei’s favourite hunting ground once again as it was in Lima, Peru that she emerged the world junior champion in 2015.
“I thought I would lose the second game, but I cut down on my mistake,” Jin Wei told the Badminton World Federation (BWF) official website.
“This result will encourage me to keep working hard for the future.”
Men’s singles shuttler Cheam June Wei had previously also clinched gold in Nanjing, China four years ago.
He won the mixed doubles with Hong Kong’s Ng Tsz Yau but the gold was not credited into the contingent’s medal tally as they were competing under the mixed-NOCs (National Olympic Committees) flag.
