KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 – Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has criticised Dr Maszlee Malik, saying that the Education Minister seemed to be preoccupied with the colour of school shoes and socks.
“Our Education Minister is foresighted. I don’t understand why there are people who criticise him. The colour of shoes and socks are actually important in the development and formation of exemplary students,” he sarcastically on his Facebook page on Monday (Oct 15).
He added that it was unfortunate that the previous Barisan Nasional ministers did not do any such research.
“I hope the ministers will even do research on the colour of the clothes and school buildings as well.
Najib had also posted a screenshot of an announcement made by Dr Maszlee that there were on-going discussions into even the colour of socks at schools.
Utusan Malaysia had reported that issues regarding the colour of socks will be decided by the Education Ministry after a discussion with its stakeholders are completed.
The report quoted Dr Maszlee as saying that the discussions were to ensure the best solutions would be obtained for the betterment of students.
On July 20, Dr Maszlee announced the black shoe ruling during a Sinar Harian forum on education, adding that all schools were allowed a one-year grace period to enable students to adapt to the new ruling.
However, on Sunday (Oct 14), the Education Ministry said that the black shoe ruling for government schools will only be fully enforced in 2021.
