KOTA BHARU, Nov 13 – The revelation by Negri Sembilan Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) head Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim that many Umno veterans want to join PPBM, proves that it is a ‘party of the past’.
Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Md Alwi Che Ahmad said a party that had a future would attract young people, not veterans or senior citizens.
“If the party is joined by veterans, it shows that the part is a organisation that belongs to the past,” he told the New Straits Times today.
“Are we going backward or going forward? This is the question all of us should ask and how many veterans are you talking about and who are the veterans?
“My opinion is that the new recruitments should be headed by Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, not Rais.”
Alwi, who is also the Kok Lanas assemblyman, also asked where PPBM was taking the Malays and the country.
He was responding to Rais’ statement that many Umno veterans and young Umno members, particularly in Johor, Kelantan and Kedah, had indicated that they wanted to join the party led by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Pas Youth vice-chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, meanwhile, said Rais seemed to be contradicting Dr Mahathir.
